Hornby Island, BC Canada - July 4th Weekend!

Jul 3 - 7, 2019

Hornby Island Diving

  • Overview
  • FAQ

Summer getaway - with great diving in Canada

The waters around Hornby Island are full of a rich variety of marine life. In any season, you can encounter Giant Pacific octopus, wolf eels, harbour seals, large ling cod and rock fish, colourful anemones and nudibranchs. Good visibility and gentle currents make the Hornby Island area easy to dive. Drift dives, wall dives, deep dives, and sculpted sandstone reefs are all part of the underwater terrain.

In July, we expect to see lots of jellies, nudibranchs and dogfish. It is not the season for Sealions, but we should have nice summer weather! The vis is generally 30-50' below 20' in the summer.

Non-divers, (and divers), will enjoy hiking and exploring Hornby Island.

Directions

  1. Take the Tsawwassen (Vancouver) to Duke Point (Nanaimo) ferry. Reservations are recommended www.bcferries.com. The crossing takes 2 hours.
    1. The 12:45 pm ferry from Tsawwassen should put you on the ferry that leaves Buckley Bay at 4:05, but you won't have time to stop;  you'll arrive at Hornby Island Diving ~ 5 pm, in time for dinner (served promptly at 6 pm).
    2. We'll probably start driving Tuesday after work and stay North of Seattle, likely in Everett; then we'll take the 10:15 am ferry from Tsawwassen. We won't make the 1:15 pm ferry from Buckley Bay, so we'll have lunch and catch the 3:15 ferry.
    3. There are two other ferry options to get onto Vancouver island.
  2. From nanaimo, drive about 1 - 1.5 hours north to Buckley Bay.
  3. Take the 10 minute ferry from Buckley Bay to Denman Island.
  4. Drive across Denman Island to Gravelly Bay (13 minutes).
  5. Take a 10 min ferry to Hornby Island.
  6. On Hornby, follow Central Road to the four-way stop. It is the only four-way stop on the island. Turn right and drive to Ford Cove. Close to where the road ends, the marina will be on the right and driveway for Hornby Island Diving will be directly across from it, and is marked.
  7. Return: Check out time is 9 am. For those of us going all the way home that day we'll probably want to leave earlier (~ 6:15 am) after a continental (or take-away) breakfast (e.g., muffins and coffee/tea) to catch the ~ 7:30 am ferry off of Hornby; that should allow us to catch the ~ 10:15 ferry out of Nanaimo (Duke Point).
